Did you know that on the first day of each month, it is traditional to say, “White rabbits!”  Rabbits have been associated with prosperity and luck for hundreds of years and so this is a way of wishing someone luck for the month ahead.  It can also be a competition for children in a household to see who remembers and says it first! 

Another expression used on the first day is, “Pinch, punch, first of the month!”  This phrase is thought to date to Medieval times when people believed in the existence of witches. The ‘pinch’ part refers to the pinching of salt – as this kitchen ingredient was believed to weaken the power of witches if thrown over them. The ‘punch’ part was to banish the witch once and for all.

So by saying these two phrases you will be protecting yourself from evil and wishing good luck to others.
