The sun shone brightly as students visited the Alresford Show, close to Riversdown. This annual event has been running since 1909 and is a wonderful celebration of rural life, bringing together farmers, families, local businesses and communities. Students enjoyed displays of chickens, sheep, vintage cars and tractors, horse-riding events, delicious local produce, traditional crafts and local brass bands. With its friendly atmosphere and countryside charm, the show allowed students to experience real English culture – even ferret racing!

This week, students have enjoyed a talk by our knowledgeable trainer, Dr Nigel Paterson, on Highclere Castle. This is the beautiful country house in Hampshire made famous for being the filming location of the popular TV series Downton Abbey. Visitors can explore the grand rooms, learn about the castle’s history, and walk around its lovely gardens. The castle is also home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. If you enjoy history, beautiful buildings, and English countryside, Highclere Castle is a wonderful place to visit and not far from Riversdown.

Access to Highclere is limited, but last year our students Javier and Sandra were able to obtain tickets and enjoyed a wonderful day at the house. And best of all, they were greeted by the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. The Earl’s great-grandfather famously funded the 1922 archaeological discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt, and his father, who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s personal racing manager, was depicted in The Crown as “Porchy”.

Student z Riversdownu navštívil Sever!

Riversdown Trainer, Chris Tanner, took one of our students “home” to the north of England last weekend. Manuel, who has been coming to Riversdown almost every year since 2007, was driven to to the charming market town of Clitheroe in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley. Due to problems on the road, the journey took nine hours, twice the expected time! On arrival, they stayed in the charming town of Downham and explored the Clitheroe area. On Saturday, they attended a Blackburn Rovers football match, celebrating a 2-1 win over Middlesborough. Chris is an enthusiastic supporter and Chairman of the Blackburn Rovers Swedish Supporters’ Association, something he will happily tell you all about!

Both gentlemen returned to Riversdown late on Sunday evening, tired but full of stories of their northern adventures.

Fíky a rebarbora!

Riversdown’s grounds are bursting with fruit and, thanks to this year’s very hot summer, the figs have finally ripened for the first time in many years. Figs have grown in the UK for centuries, and featured in a jam recipe from the time of Jane Austen with orange, lemon and ginger.

In addition, the garden here always produces rhubarb, which many have enjoyed as a crumble for dessert. The recipe can be found in the Riversdown cookbook. The stalks of rhubarb are most commonly cooked with sugar and take on a bright, pink colour.

Meet Claire, Christine, Andy and Calum – our newest Riversdown trainers! Some of you will have already had the pleasure of being taught by them, and you will know what great additions they are to the team. Our trainers are all native speakers and come from diverse areas of the UK: Claire and Christine are from Wales, Callum from Edinburgh and Andy from England. This benefits students by giving them different accents and, also, styles of teaching.

All our trainers meet the British Council standard for qualifications, and many exceed these. Claire and Andy have experience working as Directors of Studies for large organisations. All have taught internationally (Calum also teaches Business English in Madrid) and have vast experience of teaching English as a Foreign Language. For example, Andy has been teaching for more than 30 years. Having started out as a classroom teacher in London, he spent 7 very happy years working in Italy as a Business English teacher before returning to the UK in 2020. Claire also has over 30 years experience and holds a Masters in Linguistics. She has prepared students for the IELTS and Cambridge exams and has a particular interest in the use of AI in language learning.

All of our new trainers are also residents at Riversdown, so students benefit from speaking English with them at breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as enjoying social activities together. We are fortunate to have such a talented group who have wide-ranging interests and some hidden talents – including cooking and writing/performing music!

Společnost Riversdown vítá nového saudského zástupce

We recently welcomed Saleh Alanazi from Saudi Arabia to Riversdown. Saleh works in corporate communications and is a TV football commentator. He was happy to talk about his culture with us during a presentation on his country. We are delighted to have shared this time with him, particularly as he found the one-to-one course at Riversdown much more focused on his needs and interests than the group lessons he had taken in London. This week we had the pleasure of training Abdullah, a corporate lawyer from Saudi Arabia. He too has enjoyed his stay and said, “My experience at Riversdown House has exceeded my expectations. The teaching is highly personalised and focused, with genuine care to ensure every student gets the most from the programme. The environment is excellent, with great attention to detail and a consistently high standard of quality throughout.”

Caroline and Dan from Riversdown were happy to meet agents from Language Tour, based in Saudi Arabia, and accepted a certificate of partnership to work with them. They look forward to welcoming many more students from the Middle East in the future.

My Fair Lady v Chichesteru

Students enjoyed a 5 star performance of the classic musical, My Fair Lady at nearby Chichester Festival Theatre. With book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, the multi award-winning musical broke Broadway records when it opened in 1956 and was adapted into the 1964 Oscar-winning film starring Julie Andrews. It tells the story of cockney Eliza Doolittle, who scrapes a living selling flowers on the streets of London. Her dream of being a lady in a florist’s shop is out of reach unless she can speak ‘proper English’. So when she encounters Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, she seizes the chance to transform her life. A perfect topic for a group of English students – “loverly”!

Je mu 96 let – a stále je plný elánu!

This week Richard Lewis, founder of Riversdown House, celebrated his 96th birthday with family, friends, teachers and students. On a warm summer’s evening, the party sipped champagne as they listened to live jazz music in Riversdown’s beautiful garden. Richard Lewis was joined by Kai Hammerich, his co-author on their bestselling book Fish Can’t See Water: How national culture can make or break your corporate strategy. Kai made a moving speech in honour of his friend. The group then enjoyed a three course dinner, with birthday cake, in the legendary Riversdown dining room.

Riversdown míří do Wimbledonu!

Two lucky students this week enjoyed tickets for the final on Centre Court. And with two female Czech players in the Ladies Final, Wimbledon has been entertaining our Czech student especially. Well done Noskova! If your tennis is not quite at that level, you can always enjoy the grass court at Riversdown followed by Pimms and strawberries.

In addition, England are through to the semi-finals of the World Cup! Students staying at Riversdown have enjoyed watching matches with our ex-Arsenal player, John Harris. Teachers from Wales and Scotland have been a little quiet on the subject…

Žáci ze školy Riversdown se díky hudbě opět setkali!

A wonderful informal Riversdown House reunion took place last weekend at Solothurn, Switzerland, as Riversdown students and friends came together for the Rock This Town rock ‘n’ roll weekender. It was fantastic to see the Riversdown connection continuing well beyond the classroom, with Chris (Tanner) and Sandra, Adrian and Andrea, Stefan and Nicole, Hampi and Richard all part of the weekend.

Friday brought a strong line-up with Texabilly Rockets, Batmobile, Si Cranstoun and Natty Bo, while Saturday was a real highlight with The Go Getters and Jack Baymoore & The Bandits.

It really felt like Riversdown met Rock This Town – a brilliant reminder that the relationships formed at Riversdown can continue long after the course has finished.
